Shockwave Therapy for Achilles Tendonitis

Available at Our Office in the VI Medical Foundation Building 202

Achilles tendonitis (also called Achilles tendinopathy) is a common overuse injury causing pain, swelling, and stiffness along the Achilles tendon—the thick band connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone. It often affects runners, athletes, or those with sudden increases in activity, and can be insertional (at the heel) or mid-portion (higher up the tendon).

How Shockwave Therapy Helps Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive treatment that applies focused acoustic waves to the damaged tendon. This promotes natural recovery by:

  • Enhancing blood circulation and stimulating new blood vessel growth (angiogenesis)

  • Breaking down scar tissue, adhesions, and calcifications

  • Reducing inflammation and pain through neurophysiological effects

  • Boosting tendon healing with increased collagen production and cellular repair

Evidence from studies shows ESWT is effective for chronic Achilles tendinopathy, delivering significant pain relief and functional gains, especially when rest, eccentric exercises, or other conservative approaches fall short.

What to Expect in Our Office Sessions are short (typically 10-15 minutes), need no anesthesia or downtime, and involve placing the handheld shockwave applicator directly over the tender areas of the Achilles tendon or heel.

Many patients experience reduced pain, improved flexibility, and better mobility after a course of treatments. If you're dealing with ongoing Achilles pain from running, sports, or daily strain, contact our office to find out if shockwave therapy can support your recovery!
