Medical Weight Loss in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands
Tradewinds Chiropractic & Wellness in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas offers a supervised medical weight loss program alongside our spine and joint care. It may seem like an odd fit for a chiropractic clinic. It is not. Extra body weight is one of the most common reasons a sore low back, an aching knee or a painful heel keeps coming back, and it raises the risk of the diabetes that drives the neuropathy we treat every week. Helping you carry less is often the most useful thing we can do for the joints we already treat.
The program is ChiroThin. It is doctor supervised: Dr. Keys runs it. There are no medications and no injections. Programs start at $1,000; the exact cost depends on what you need.
Why a spine clinic cares about your weight
The spine, hips, knees and feet carry everything above them. Each extra pound of body weight adds several pounds of force through the knees with every step, and more on stairs and the Skyline Drive hills. The low back works harder to balance a heavier midsection, the discs and facet joints load more, and the plantar fascia under the heel takes more strain on every landing.
Weight also shows up in conditions that are not mechanical. Extra weight raises the risk of type 2 diabetes, and diabetes is the leading cause of the peripheral neuropathy that brings people to us with burning, numb feet. Losing weight will not reverse nerve damage on its own, but it is one of the few things that changes the course of the disease driving it.
So when a patient with recurring low back pain, knee pain or plantar fasciitis asks what else they can do, weight is usually part of the honest answer. We would rather say it plainly and offer real help than keep adjusting a joint that is overloaded every day.
What the ChiroThin program looks like
ChiroThin is a 42-day program built on real food. There are no shakes or bars.
A conversation first. Your health history, current medications and conditions, and your goals, so Dr. Keys can tell you whether the program is a good fit.
Real food. The eating plan leans on low glycemic, anti-inflammatory choices you buy and cook yourself.
Nutritional support. The program adds a nutritional support formula containing amino acids and B12. There are no medications and no injections.
Doctor supervision. Dr. Keys runs the program himself from start to finish.
Coordination with your physician. If you are diabetic, on blood pressure or thyroid medication, or have any condition that weight loss will affect, we want your primary care physician in the loop, and we will communicate with them if you want us to.
We do not promise a number of pounds or a date. Anyone who does is guessing. What we promise is a clear plan, a doctor supervising it, and a straight answer when it is not working.
Dr. Keys is the Chair of the Virgin Islands Board of Chiropractic Examiners, a member of the Virgin Islands Chiropractic Society, and the International Chiropractors Association representative for the U.S. Virgin Islands. He has run the clinic since it opened in April 2018, and he supervises the ChiroThin program personally.
Who this is for
The patients who do best usually have a reason that matters to them: a back that flares every few months, knees that make stairs a chore, feet that burn at night, a doctor who has mentioned prediabetes, or a charter season coming up that they want to be fit for. If you are already a patient here for lower back pain, plantar fasciitis and heel pain, or peripheral neuropathy, ask about it at your next visit. If you are new, call and ask for a consultation.
When you should see a physician or endocrinologist first
Some situations call for a physician before a weight loss program:
Rapid weight gain or loss you did not intend, especially with fatigue, heat or cold intolerance, hair loss or changes in your period. That needs thyroid and other labs first.
Known or suspected diabetes that is not under control, or any episode of very high or very low blood sugar. An endocrinologist or your primary physician should set the ground rules before you change how you eat.
Heart disease, kidney disease, a history of eating disorders, or pregnancy and breastfeeding.
If you are considering prescription weight loss medication, the prescribing and monitoring belong with your physician or another licensed medical provider. ChiroThin itself uses no medications and no injections.
None of this is a reason not to call. It is a reason to get the right person involved from the start.
How it connects to the rest of your care
The point of losing weight here is to make the rest of your care work better. Less load means an adjustment holds longer, rehab exercises hurt less, custom orthotics and heel care do more, and neuropathy care is not fighting rising blood sugar. Because Dr. Keys runs both the weight loss program and your spine and joint care, the two stay connected. Our full service list is at all services.
