Whiplash and Car Accident Care in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands
/Whiplash is a neck injury caused by the head being thrown back and forward faster than the neck muscles can react, most often in a rear-end collision. Dr. Bradley Keys, Doctor of Chiropractic, treats whiplash and other crash injuries at Tradewinds Chiropractic & Wellness in St. Thomas, and most settle with conservative care once serious injury is ruled out.
What whiplash feels like
Often very little at the scene. You drive home shaken but fine. The next morning the neck is stiff and will not turn to one side. By day two or three there is a headache starting at the base of the skull, an ache between the shoulder blades, and a neck that is tired of holding your head up by mid-afternoon. Jaw pain, ringing in the ears, a spacey feeling, tingling down one arm and low back pain are all common.
The delay is normal. Muscle guarding and swelling build over the first 24 to 72 hours, so the worst of it usually arrives one to three days after the crash.
What is usually going on
In a rear-end collision the seat pushes your body forward while your head lags, then snaps forward. The small facet joints at the back of the neck get jammed, the ligaments and muscles at the front get overstretched, and sometimes a disc is irritated. That is a neck sprain and strain, and it behaves like a sprained ankle: sore, stiff, and slow to settle if it is ignored or kept completely still.
We drive on the left in cars built for the right, so many low-speed collisions here are side impacts at blind pullouts and on the switchbacks toward Skyline Drive. Safari taxi benches have no headrests, which lets the head travel further. Scooter riders take the hit through the wrists and shoulders as well as the neck. Whiplash does not need speed. It happens at parking-lot speeds all the time.
How we treat it at Tradewinds
The first visit starts with the crash itself: direction of impact, headrest position, whether you saw it coming. Then a hands-on exam of the neck, mid back and low back, with a neurological check of the arms and legs. After a crash we are quick to take digital x-rays on site, because a fracture or an unstable segment has to be ruled out before anyone adjusts your neck.
Dr. Keys is the Chair of the Virgin Islands Board of Chiropractic Examiners, a member of the Virgin Islands Chiropractic Society, and the International Chiropractors Association representative for the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Early care is gentle: low-force methods, instrument assisted soft tissue work for the guarded muscles, and easy movement that keeps the neck from locking up. A soft collar or bed rest beyond a day or two slows recovery. As the acute phase settles, Dr. Keys restores motion at the jammed facet joints with a specific adjustment (Diversified, Gonstead or drop table, chosen by the exam), and spinal rehabilitation rebuilds the deep neck muscles the crash switched off. All of it is on our services page. Lingering neck pain, headaches and upper back pain after a crash have their own pages.
We document the injury from the first visit: mechanism, exam findings, range of motion, and progress at each re-check. Most whiplash improves over a few weeks to a couple of months. A minority takes longer, and we tell you early rather than keep adjusting and hoping.
We bill auto insurance after a crash and work with attorney liens. We write reports for attorneys and insurance adjusters. We also write return-to-work and work-restriction notes. Bring anything related to the crash: imaging, notes from other doctors, ER paperwork, your auto insurance claim information, and your attorney's contact details if you have one.
When you should see someone else
Go to the emergency room first, not our office, if you have any of these after a crash:
- You were knocked out, even briefly, or cannot remember the crash
- Worsening headache, repeated vomiting, confusion, unusual sleepiness, or one pupil larger than the other (signs of concussion or bleeding)
- Numbness or weakness in both arms or both legs, or trouble walking
- Severe neck pain with tenderness down the middle of the spine, or a neck you cannot turn at all
- Chest pain, shortness of breath, or belly pain from the seatbelt
A concussion can ride along with whiplash and is easy to miss because the neck hurts more. If you hit your head, or the headache is getting worse instead of better, get it checked. We arrange an MRI or a specialist referral if arm or leg symptoms progress, if x-rays show more than a sprain, or if you are not improving on the timeline we set.
Visitors, crew and cruise passengers
Rental cars, taxis and scooters account for a good share of the crashes we see, and visitors are often on a plane two or three days later. Come in before you fly if you can. We examine you, document the injury, start care, and send you home with a written summary for your own chiropractor or physician. The office is a short drive from the Havensight cruise port. We take walk-ins and same-day appointments.

Questions patients ask
Is there a chiropractor for whiplash in St. Thomas?
Yes. Dr. Bradley Keys at Tradewinds Chiropractic & Wellness in Estate Thomas treats whiplash with gentle early care, specific adjustment once the neck has settled, and spinal rehabilitation to rebuild the neck muscles. The clinic has digital x-ray on site. Call (340) 690-4994.
Where do I go after a car accident in St. Thomas for neck and back pain?
If you hit your head, were knocked out, have numbness or weakness in both arms or legs, or have chest or belly pain, go to the emergency room first. If it is neck and back pain without those signs, Tradewinds Chiropractic & Wellness can examine you, x-ray if needed, and start care. Bring any ER paperwork with you.
I felt fine after the crash. Why does my neck hurt now?
That is the usual course for whiplash. Muscle guarding and swelling build over the first one to three days, so the stiffness and headache often show up the next morning or the day after. Delayed onset does not mean a worse injury, but it is a reason to get examined rather than wait it out.
Do I need an x-ray after a car accident?
Often, yes. After a crash we want to rule out a fracture or an unstable segment before adjusting the neck, so we take digital x-rays on site when the exam calls for it. If the emergency room already imaged you, bring the report and we will usually not repeat it.
Is it safe to get adjusted after a car accident?
Once fracture and instability have been ruled out, yes. Early on we use low-force methods and soft tissue work rather than a forceful adjustment, and we move to specific adjustment as the acute pain settles. Care is matched to the stage of healing and to what the exam shows.
