Insurance, Costs and Payment at Tradewinds Chiropractic in St. Thomas

Two questions come up before almost every first call: does the clinic take my insurance, and what does a visit cost. This page answers both with the plans we accept and the prices we charge.

What insurance Tradewinds accepts

We accept Medicare, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, UnitedHealthcare and Aetna, and we bill your insurance for you. If your plan is not one of those, call (340) 690-4994 with your card and we will tell you before you book.

Chiropractic coverage varies more than most medical benefits, even between plans from the same insurer. Some plans cover it like any other specialist visit, some limit the number of visits a year, and some leave part of the visit to you. That is true across the industry, not just here, so a short call with your card in hand is worth it before the first visit. If you are on Medicare, our Medicare page explains what Medicare Part B covers for chiropractic care and what it usually does not.

Who you are paying for

Tradewinds Chiropractic & Wellness is a small, owner-run clinic, not a chain. When you ask a billing question, you are asking the office that treats you. Dr. Keys is the Chair of the Virgin Islands Board of Chiropractic Examiners, a member of the Virgin Islands Chiropractic Society, and the International Chiropractors Association representative for the U.S. Virgin Islands. He has practiced on St. Thomas since 2015 and has run the clinic in Charlotte Amalie since it opened in April 2018.

Self-pay rates

Self-pay rates are $120 for the initial exam, $40 for a chiropractic adjustment, and $20 for each therapy. Extracorporeal shockwave therapy is $50 a session.

Custom foot orthotics are $300 and are not covered by insurance. Your feet are analyzed with a digital topographical scan and thermography, and the orthotics are ready in about two weeks.

Massage is with Michelle, our licensed massage therapist. Swedish, therapeutic, deep tissue, prenatal and postnatal, and hot and cold stone massage are $140 for 60 minutes, $210 for 90 minutes and $280 for 120 minutes. Sports massage, which includes cupping, gua sha and stretching, is $160 for 60 minutes. If you want to know whether your plan covers massage, ask when you book.

HSA, FSA, and payment arrangements

We take HSA and FSA cards. For a longer course of care we can set up payment arrangements, and we accept CareCredit. If cost is what is holding you back from starting care, say so on the phone before you book.

Visitors, boat crew and cruise passengers

Visitors and boat or ship crew can pay by card. We do not have billing arrangements with charter or cruise companies, so crew pay directly or use their own insurance. A ship's medical officer or HR department can be given a return-to-work or work-restriction note. See hurt your back on vacation and boat and charter crew for more on those visits.

After a car accident

We bill auto insurance after a crash and work with attorney liens. We write reports for attorneys and insurance adjusters. We also write return-to-work and work-restriction notes.

Bring anything related to the crash: imaging, notes from other doctors, ER paperwork, your auto insurance claim information, and your attorney's contact details if you have one. Our car accident and injury patients page covers the rest of that visit.

Hurt at work

We do not bill workers' compensation. If you were hurt on the job, you can still be seen at the self-pay rates above. Our construction and trades page covers the work injuries we see most.

What happens at your first visit, however you are paying

The exam does not change with how a visit is billed. A first visit takes about an hour: a history, a hands-on exam, and a plan built from what Dr. Keys finds, with digital x-ray added only if the case calls for it. Most patients are adjusted on the first visit, unless something in the exam rules it out or you need to be referred elsewhere first. Our services page lists everything we offer.
