How Many Chiropractic Visits Will I Need?
/Nobody wants to sign up for an open-ended plan they cannot see the end of, or a bill they cannot predict. That worry is reasonable, and pretending a single number applies to every case would be a worse answer than admitting there isn't one. What follows is how the decision actually gets made, what it depends on, and what you are entitled to ask before you agree to anything.
Why there is no one-size answer
Visit count depends on what is actually wrong, how long it has been going on, how you respond to the first few visits, and what you do outside the office between appointments. A stiff joint that has only bothered you for a week behaves nothing like a disc problem that has been building for two years. Our page on how long sciatica takes to heal walks through one specific example of that reasoning. The same logic applies to almost every condition treated here, not just sciatica, and anyone who quotes you a firm number before examining you is guessing.
How the decision is normally made
A course of care generally follows a pattern, whatever the specific condition. An initial exam sets a baseline and a working diagnosis. A handful of early visits test whether that diagnosis is right by watching how you actually respond. A re-assessment at a set point compares where you are against where the exam expected you to be. If you are on track, care continues on the plan that is working. If you are not, the plan changes, or you get referred for imaging or a specialist opinion, rather than continuing the same approach on faith. That is how a responsible course of conservative care generally works, not a promise about your specific case.
What we do at Tradewinds
Dr. Keys is the Chair of the Virgin Islands Board of Chiropractic Examiners, a member of the Virgin Islands Chiropractic Society, and the International Chiropractors Association representative for the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Every condition page on this site that involves a course of care describes the same habit: a plan built from the exam, a re-check date, and a direct answer if you are not improving on schedule rather than more of the same plan indefinitely. We are not going to hand you a visit count before your exam, because a number given before an exam is not a real estimate. We would rather tell you that plainly than make one up because it sounds reassuring.
What it costs, and your right to ask
Cost is part of the same worry as visit count, and it deserves the same honesty. We accept Medicare, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, UnitedHealthcare and Aetna, and we bill your insurance for you. Self-pay rates are $120 for the initial exam, $40 for a chiropractic adjustment, and $20 for each therapy. We take HSA and FSA cards. For a longer course of care we can set up payment arrangements, and we accept CareCredit. Our insurance and costs page has the rest of our prices and payment options. Ask for a specific estimate before you commit to a plan, not after you have started. A clinic that cannot tell you roughly what a course of care will run, or will not commit to checking your progress against a real date, is not one you should have to guess about.
Questions worth asking before you commit
You are entitled to ask, at any point in a course of care, what the plan is, why it is that plan and not a shorter one, what it costs, and when you will be re-assessed. A straight answer to those four questions, updated as you go, matters more than any number promised on the first visit. If a plan cannot be explained to you in plain terms, that is worth questioning, regardless of who is offering it.

Questions patients ask
How many chiropractic visits will I need?
It depends on what is actually wrong, how long it has been going on, and how you respond to the first few visits. There is no honest single number without an exam. A responsible plan sets a baseline, checks your progress at a set point, and changes course if you are not on track.
Why won't you just tell me a number before my first visit?
Because a number given before an exam is not a real estimate, it is a guess dressed up as one. We would rather examine you, tell you what the exam actually shows, and set a re-check date than promise a figure that has nothing behind it.
How much does a course of chiropractic care cost?
Cost depends on how many visits your plan involves and what your insurance covers. Self-pay rates are $120 for the initial exam, $40 for a chiropractic adjustment, and $20 for each therapy. We accept Medicare, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, UnitedHealthcare and Aetna, and we bill your insurance for you. For a longer course of care we can set up payment arrangements, and we accept CareCredit.
What should I ask before agreeing to a treatment plan?
Ask what the plan is, why it is that plan rather than a shorter one, what it costs, and when you will be re-assessed. You are entitled to a straight answer to all four, updated as your care continues, from any clinic you see.
How do I know if my plan is actually working?
A responsible plan includes a re-check date where your progress gets compared against what the exam expected. If you are on track, care continues. If you are not, the plan changes rather than continuing unchanged. Ask what your re-check date is and what it will be measured against.
